 I’ve been in the seal coating industry since 1994 I have seen and learned everything there is to know about the business. In 2003, I read an article in the Chicago Tribune about the harmful effects of coal tar. A study was done in a suburb right outside of Chicago (Lake in the Hills). The article stated that coal tar was toxic and should not be used. Coal-Tar causes cancers like leukemia and other diseases. Coal tar flakes off and gets tracked into homes. Coal tar also kills the aquatic life. Over time, the chemical will wash away into drains and taking it to water ways, ponds, and rivers. Lake in the Hills banned coal tar and Coal tar is banned in 25 other states. I chose to switch to an environmentally safe asphalt sealant which costs more. I had to raise my prices and try to make the public aware of this toxic sealant that was being put on residential driveways and parking lots. Because my prices was higher than my competitor, my business did suffer. I chose people over money and even though I had some rough years, I would do it again. I believe in doing the right thing. Most companies know about the harmful effects of coal tar, yet they continue to use coal tar because it’s a cheap product. Here at Super Seal, we only use environmentally safe asphalt sealant.
